Troop Withdraw

Promise:  Get all combat troops out of Iraq within 16 months.

Users must be registered and logged in to pledge and can only pledge once per Pledge Poll / Promise.  This helps keep our Pledge Poll Totals from being spammed.  To register, either scroll to the bottom of the page, or Click Here to Register.

The promise goes on to state some troops will remain to carry out targeted strikes against al-Qaida, and provide security for diplomats.  Keeping this promise will really result in the vast majority of forces being withdrawn.

Current number of troops in Iraq:  Somewhere in the 140,000 range (per Wikipedia, and news sites)
Number of troops in Iraq by the end of 16 months (June 2010) that we would consider fulfillment of promise: anything less than 10,000

Note:  The promise was made in Oct. 2007, but we aren’t starting the 16 month clock until Jan. 21, 2009.

How we are defining / determining the Promise:

1. We will use the Wikipedia entry noted above as our source (unless we find a more reliable source).

2. The number of troops has to remain below the 10,000 threshold for at least 6 months.

3.  We are using a threshold of 10,000 because we are not military strategists and have no idea how many troops “targeted attack forces” or “security for diplomats” will take.  10,000 seemed like a good number (sounds like a lot, but is definately a fraction of how many are there now).  We are willing to adjust this number if presented with good information for its increase or decrease.

I’m going to Afghanistan soon, so I can’t promise any community service hours, but I really like your idea and hope it gets the support it deserves. What I can do is be a representative for all Americans who have not supported the poor policies and slandering of the moderate Muslim communities by the former US administration. I will be training Afghans to treat their own soldiers and hopefully make it possible for American troops to come home. America needs to realize that militant Muslims are a minority and Muslims need to be shown how generous, open and accepting Americans can be of those who are different but want peace.
