Latest data (end of year 2007):  Installed Renewable Energy Capacity (including hydropower) - 110 GW.

Starting Point:  (to be determined when 2008 Renewable Energy Data Book is published)
Ending Point:  2x starting point, or _____  (tbd when starting point is defined).

Our approximation: Installed Renewable Energy Capacity (incl. hydropower) by the end of 2012 should be somewhere near 300 GW.

For our Pledges, we have listed several options just in case the mark is not met, feel free to Pledge in any one of the options in our Pledge Poll below:

Note:  Estimated completion date would be Sept. 2013 when the 2012 data would be published, unless the promise is met before then.

How we are defining / determining the Promise

For this promise to be accomplished:

1.  One must define “Energy”, as well as “Renewable sources”.  For our purposes, we are going to define energy in terms of Gigawatts (GW) and are only going to focus on the electric energy production.   As for renewable sources, we will utilize the definition that the US Department of Energy uses.  This generally includes Solar, Geothermal, Wind, Water (wave, hydro (dams), etc.), Bio (landfill gas, waste-to-energy projects, poop power, etc.), and any yet to be proven / invented technologies.

2.  We must define a starting point for measurement, and be consistent in measurement.  For this we will simply rely on the US Department of Energy - Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy.  We will utilize their reports to define the starting line and define where we are in 4 years.  More specifically, we will utilize their Renewable Energy Data Book (provided that it is published each year) and utilize the “installed capacity including hydropower”.  The latest Data Book was published in Sept. 2008 and is as of 12/31/07, so in order to show end of year 2008 numbers, we will have to wait at least until Sept. 2009 to do so.  In the mean time, we will show 2007 numbers here just for representation and show the 2008 numbers when available.
