FAQs

Here are some of our Frequently Asked Questions:

1.  Are you associated with any non-profit organizations that we have to be a member of to pledge community service hours?

  • No.  We are not affiliated with any non-profit organization nor do you have to be a member to pledge your time.  Any pledge by you is up to you to fullfill, and up to you on how to fullfill.  There are many options and ways to find a volunteer program near you.

2.  Are you a non-profit organization?

  • No.  We are not a non-profit organization.  We do not accept donations, and are not tax exempt.  It was much faster and easier to just create our organization as a “not just for-profit” organization and then simply try to recoup our expenses through the use of the advertising & merchandise you see on our site.  We established this site for all the reasons on our About Us page.

3.  What is/does “not just for-profit” mean/do?

  • The idea behind a not just for-profit (NJFP) company, is the company does not base profit soley on money.  It bases profit on a common goal or for the betterment of something.  More information / a more complete definition can be found on Wikipedia.

4.  Who runs the site?

  • We have a small group of individuals who have donated their time and effort to helping develop the site and maintain it.  The bulk of the operation is done by the founder (PledgeMaster) though.

5.  Can I submit a Promise? / How do I submit a Promise that was made?

  • #1  Make sure the promise was made by the President.  This will need some documentation from a credible source like a quote from a press release, newspaper, the President’s website, etc.
  • #2 Make sure the promise is measurable - we can not know if it is completed if we can not measure it.
  • #3 Make sure it is a promise that can be met w/in his term in office.  At this point those are the promises we are focusing on.  Yes, long term thinking & planning is beneficial, but the proceeding President can influence the results quite dramatically.
  • #4 Make sure the promise is something that actually adds some meaningful benefit to society.  This is of course subjective, but let me give you an example of “fluff” promises that we are not including:
    • To create a cabinet position and staff that position with someone of x race/color/cred/national orgin/sex/sexual preference/religion/climate philosphy, etc.  This type of promise is very easy to keep and doesn’t really define any benefits to the country or scope for the position.  This may be fine and dandy for that specific group, but our philosophy is that a President should create cabinet positions for the benefit of the country, and to fill those positions with the most qualified candidate regardless of all the group orientations mentioned.
    • Give an annual energy speech.  Again, easy to accomplish, may or may not actually mean anything, and anyone can make a speech, we are concerned with actual, tangible, results.
    • These are just two examples, and we are by no means saying the promises we have listed are any more important than any of the other promises, we are just trying to give you an example of what to expect on our site.
  • #5 Make sure the Promise is not already listed, or “too close” to one that is already listed.
  • #6 Send the Proposed Promise, along with reasons you think it should be included, documentation links, and measuring suggestions to:  SuggestAPromise@theleapforamerica.org
  • If these suggestions become part of our site, your Name (if desired) will be credited on the Promise page.  Creating a page for voting the best submissions into the Promises pages is on our To-Do list once demand dictates it.

6.  If I pledge to a promise and the promise is kept, how do you know if I performed my community service or not?

  • We don’t.  Everything is on the honor system.  We aren’t here to hold your hand.  We hope that all participants are sincere when pledging and will actually follow through on their pledge if / when the respective promise is kept. You are held to the same accountability you have asked your fellow representive to uphold.

7.  Don’t websites cost $, where are you getting funding for this site, do you have a corporate sponsor?  (same question stated differently - Are you skewing the results, establishing this site for some political or corporate reason?  What are your intentions?)

  • In a nutshell, NO.  We are not sponsored by any corporate entity, we do not represent, nor are we affiliated with any political party.
  • In another nutshell - see the answer to FAQs #2.
  • Yes, websites cost $.  The costs of this website will hopefully be covered by the small amount of advertising blocks we have established.  Don’t be mistaken, this is not our full-time job, nor does it generate enough to be.  We established this site because we wanted to make a difference, and see actual change in the Country and possibly the World.  Those are the only intentions we  have, and are why we are bearing the costs of building and maintaining the site.
  • We are not skewing any results or only showing promises that benefit some entity.  We do not manipulate any results (except where fraud and spam are suspected).

#8.  I am having trouble registering.  I clicked “Register” at the bottom of the page, and typed in my username & email, but I haven’t received a temporary password.

  • Did you check your Junk or Spam folder?  The email is automatically generated by our software, so it will be “from”  wordpress@theleapforamerica.org
  • If you still don’t see it in there, you can email the PledgeMaster - PledgeMaster@theleapforamerica.org  he can go into the settings, change your password to something easy and send a reply to you what it is.  Note, it will take at least one day for the PledgeMaster to respond, so don’t expect immediate turn-around like the automatically generated ones provide.
  • 99% of the time, people who “did not receive the password email” will find it caught in their junk or spam.  Check first, it will be much easier and faster. :)
